As I read some of my posts from the past, I’m surprised at what I was able to write, my poems and insight into my life. I wonder why I can’t do that all the time. I read my Yuletide poem and I can’t believe that I wrote it. I’ve tried since then, but nothing good comes of trying. Maybe its a lack of inspiration, or muse if you will. Maybe its that I’m too critical....

As I move forward with my life, old patterns are erased and new ones form. I leave the comfort of being a great student behind and wonder who I am without high school and the friends who surrounded me while I was there. I’m not worried that I won’t know who I am; I’m excited to find out. Although it may be lonely and somewhat unnerving, stepping out on my own excites me. I look...

Bucket List
wandering-vagabond: I have recently discovered a documentary show that MTV produces; The Buried Life. The reason it has taken me such a ridiculous amount of time to discover said show is for the following reasons; a) I do not have television b) I am not an Internet junkie *seriously* and c) I believe MTV is “artistically” infused teenage television, created for the enrichment of pocket books and...

Realist vs. Dreamer
The realist in me: So why do you want to go to Ireland?
The dreamer in me: It just looks so beautiful and magical. You look at pictures and everything is green and colorful and alive. The castles are so mysterious and beautiful and the cliffs look breathtaking. It just looks so beautiful and it has always drawn me.
The realist: What if you get there and it is nothing like what you expected? What if it doesn't live up to your high expectations?
The dreamer: Then I'll keep traveling and see all the magical, beautiful places of the world until a find a place that lives up to my expectations. Then, when I die, I'll go to heaven and it will exceed my expectations and be the most beautiful place ever.

Blankets for Babies
Last year our Nicaragua team raised money for kids packs for a kids party. We bought over 200 kids packs and the smiles on the kids’ faces made the effort well worth it. When we were in Nicaragua last year we met many young women in their teens with children of their own. Due to incest and rape, many young women are getting pregnant, some as young as 12 years old. There is a place where young...

72 Days
72 days from now, on February 10, 2010, I will be returning to Nicaragua on my second missions trip. Many of the people who went last year are going back again along with some new friends. Last year the trip really impacted me and I am really excited to be going back. 2 weeks ago we sorted the bottles from our bottle drive and raised over 1700 dollars. On December 4, Midnight Madness in Three...

...the future is bright?
wandering-vagabond: If you would have asked me a few days ago if I thought my future was bright I would have sheepishly responded “yes”. How easily our views can be changed by another’s questioning words. In a few months highschool will be finished and tossed aside like an old rag, the bright new shiny future will stand before me, and yet I am frightened. I am unsure as to what the future will...

Wrapped in the Arms of Music
At the risk of sounding cliche, music is a balm to the troubled soul. Music rides life’s highs and brings more joy to the good times, but it also brings comfort in the lows. If you watch a movie without the soundtrack, you won’t experience the same emotions as you would with the soundtrack. Music has a way of influencing how you feel. When a baby is crying, you sing lullabies to calm...

Overwhelmed
Sometimes life completely overwhelms me. I get caught up in the little things and start to drown. When things don’t go as planned or when something or someone disappoints me, my emotions get way to fragile. The next thing I know I’m crying over spilt milk - literally. I need to learn to pull myself out. I know that its a simple act of changing my attitude that will turn it right...

Love Is All
It is my favorite pair of jeans That are patched and worn in; It is the fulfillment of my dreams; It is a game I never win. It is addiction to cocaine; It only takes one look; It is dancing in the rain; It is reading a good book. It is hot coffee or tea; It is dark chocolate when I’m sad; It is cigarettes by the sea; It is a mix of good and bad. Love encompasses every thought; ...

School Again
There is such a difference between how I feel this year and how I felt this same time last year. Last year I was so depressed at the end of the summer and was dreading the start of school. I think the main reason that I was feeling so down was because my best friend had moved away at the start of the summer and I felt so distant from my other friends. This year, however I have great friends who I...

Another Nicaragua Story
On our first day in Bluefields, we visited the rock quarry. We drove the truck further into the quarry and by the time we reached our destination there were lots of kids chasing after us. As soon as I got out of the vehicle this one little girl came up to me and held onto my hand. We crossed a fence and walked towards the large hole in the ground. I looked down to see where I was putting my feet...

skin
wandering-vagabond: Skin is an interesting organism, it can be warm, cold, punctured, burned, scraped, frozen, it’s also nearly waterproof and one of the most impervious living materials on earth. We are wrapped in it, our organs are incased in it, we embody it. I find this extremely interesting, and i’m not sure why. The thought sort of blindsided me on this idle tuesday while boiling water for...

Let the little children come to me
Today we spoke about our Nicaragua trip in the elementary school chapels. In the second chapel we sang the song, He Has Made Me Glad. At the end one of the teachers asked the kids if they were glad that school was almost done and if they were glad for their teachers and if they were glad for the sun. And the kids yelled out ‘yeah’ to almost everything that he said. The kids clapped and...

Windows
When we were down in Nicaragua everyone bought something to bring back and sell at an auction. We wanted to raise about $3000 to send back to the church in Muelle de los Bueyes so they could buy the windows to finish the church. On Sunday we had our auction and dessert night. We spoke about our trip and watched Jaron’s documentary. We raised all the money for the windows. Everyone was such a...
